Most traditional hot cups use a thin polyethylene (PE) lining so paperboard can hold liquid without softening. That liner works — but it is also why many municipal systems struggle to recycle “paper” cups at scale.
Aqueous coating replaces (or sharply reduces) that plastic film with a water-based barrier system applied to the board. The cup still needs to survive heat, grease splash, and hold time; the difference is end-of-life and ESG storytelling for procurement teams.
